It&#8217;s worth it to take a moment and remember what we&#8217;re capable of as a species and a people.<\/p>\n<p>We rented one disc of the great miniseries &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/B000A0GYD2\/armedliberal-20?creative=0&#038;camp=0&#038;adid=14JH20X6736CQHXR3A41&#038;link_code=as1\" target=\"browser\">From The Earth To The Moon<\/a>&#8216;, and then went ahead and bought it.<\/p>\n<p>One reason I love this series so much is that it honors not only the astronauts, but all the people in white polyester short-sleeved shirts who stood behind them and made the machines that took them on their voyages.<\/p>\n<p>We don&#8217;t tend to value those people much these days, and we ought to. I had dinner (with a LA Times journalist, no less &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/classified\/automotive\/highway1\/la-hy-ninja7jun07,1,6090625.story\" target=\"browser\">Susan Carpenter<\/a>, their new motorcycle columnist) in Los Feliz a while ago, and one thought I had as a walked past the cafes full of well-travelled, well-dressed tattooed hipsters was that they would look on those guys with contempt.
