{"id":1244,"date":"2006-10-27T05:11:39","date_gmt":"2006-10-27T05:11:39","guid":{"rendered":"0"},"modified":"2006-10-27T05:14:13","modified_gmt":"2006-10-27T05:14:13","slug":"mining_for_fact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcdanziger.com\/?p=1244","title":{"rendered":"Mining For Facts"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote><p><i>Mr. Byron Calame<br \/>\nPublic Editor<br \/>\nNew York Times<\/p>\n<p>Dear Mr. Calame:<\/p>\n<p>Reading my Times RSS feed today, I noticed an editorial about mining: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2006\/10\/26\/opinion\/26thu3.html?ex=1319515200&#038;en=6b007160d226adb7&#038;ei=5090&#038;partner=rssuserland&#038;emc=rss\" target=\"browser\">Weakening the Fight for Mine Safety.<\/a>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I read it with interest, and no small astonishment.<\/p>\n<p>From reading the article, you&#8217;d assume that miners today faced conditions unprecedented in modern times, and that hazard and death were increasing rapidly under the Bush Administration.<\/p>\n<p>I have many differences with the Administration &#8211; many of them detailed on my blog at www.windsofchange.net &#8211; but here I&#8217;m just puzzled.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p><i>Because when I looked into it, I discovered that death and injury rates during the Bush Administration were lower than those during the Clinton Administration.<\/p>\n<p>I blogged about it here.<\/p>\n<p>http:\/\/www.windsofchange.net\/archives\/008199.php<\/p>\n<p>I went and updated my information &#8211; this was from March, 2006 &#8211; and got this result:<\/p>\n<p>The average number of deaths from Jan 1993 &#8211; Dec 2000 was 89.37.<\/p>\n<p>The average number of deaths from Jan 2001 &#8211; Oct 2006 was 62.33.<\/p>\n<p>This took me a total of ten minutes, using publicly accessible records. I&#8217;d expect your institution to do better.<\/p>\n<p>I believe in regulation &#8211; the air I breathe here in Los Angeles is tolerable because of it.
