{"id":2659,"date":"2002-08-05T10:38:39","date_gmt":"2002-08-05T10:38:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/staging.armedliberal.com\/?p=204"},"modified":"2002-08-05T10:38:39","modified_gmt":"2002-08-05T10:38:39","slug":"enough-whining","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcdanziger.com\/?p=2659","title":{"rendered":"ENOUGH WHINING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things I do in the Real World is try and manage \u0093problem\u0094 projects \u0096 projects that are failing or otherwise in trouble \u0096 in technology and some other areas. <i>(Editor\u0092s note: I\u0092m looking for a project in Southern California right now, and if anyone hears of one, drop me a note at armed-at-armedliberal.com)<\/i> One thing I tell my team members at the beginning is this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The only thing I want to hear when you\u0092re messed up is this: \u0093I messed up. Here\u0092s what I did, here\u0092s what happened, here\u0092s how we need to fix it.\u0094 I don\u0092t want to hear how the SA caused it, or you had bad docs, or anything else except in the context of how you messed up and what we need to do to a) fix it right now; and b) make sure it doesn\u0092t happen again.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I do this, because on thing that always happens in troubled projects is blamestorming, in which everyone spends all their time figuring out how it wasn\u0092t really their fault.<br \/>\nI find admitting fault a liberating experience, and when I learned to admit my own faults in projects it was a major step in my maturation professionally and personally.<br \/>\nThat\u0092s why the current furor over the Time Magazine <a href=http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/covers\/1101020812\/story.html target=\u0094browser\u0094>article<\/a> on the current and last Administration\u0092s terrible track record on terror is making me mental.<br \/>\nAs long as the <a href=http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/aug0201.html#0703021233am target=\u0094browser\u0094>Democratic<\/a> and Republican <i>(I&#8217;m looking for a link, will have one in a bit)<\/i> operatives spend all their energy spinning this so that it looks like the other side caused it, we\u0092ll <u>never<\/u> get out of this. As far as I\u0092m concerned, every one of these fools ought to be flipping burgers as far away from the levers of power as possible, right now.<br \/>\nLet\u0092s make it clear: The Clinton administration had a chance to do something about Al-Quieda, and failed to take the opportunity. The Bush Administration had a chance before 9\/11 and failed to take the opportunity. All I want to hear from these people and their handlers is this: \u0093I messed up. Here\u0092s what I did, here\u0092s what happened, here\u0092s how we need to fix it.\u0094<br \/>\nOtherwise, shut the f**k up.
