{"id":337,"date":"2004-02-08T07:45:42","date_gmt":"2004-02-08T07:45:42","guid":{"rendered":"0"},"modified":"2006-09-28T12:08:30","modified_gmt":"2006-09-28T12:08:30","slug":"metastasis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcdanziger.com\/?p=337","title":{"rendered":"Metastasis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fascinating article in Sunday&#8217;s NY Times, essentially asking the question &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/02\/08\/international\/asia\/08TERR.html?ei=5007&#038;en=139a500b54859f1e&#038;ex=1391576400&#038;adxnnl=1&#038;partner=USERLAND&#038;adxnnlx=1076259600-ffoCBfhHMbr63I2FnzVuiA\">has Al Qaeda metastasized?<\/a>&#8216;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>The landscape of the terrorist threat has shifted, many intelligence officials around the world say, with more than a dozen regional militant Islamic groups showing signs of growing strength and broader ambitions, even as the operational power of Al Qaeda appears diminished.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the militant groups, with roots from Southeast Asia, Central Asia and the Caucasus to North Africa and Europe, are believed to be loosely affiliated with Al Qaeda, the officials say. But other groups follow their own agenda, merely drawing inspiration from Osama bin Laden&#8217;s periodic taped messages calling for attacks against the United States and its allies, the officials say. <\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>OK, here&#8217;s a question. My knee-jerk reaction is that this demonstrates the fragility of the &#8216;pursue Al Qaeda&#8217; strategy espoused by many of those who oppose the Iraq War.
