Current solar cells can only convert 6 percent of the suns energy into electricity.<\/p>\n<p>* Rambus is pushing a new eXtreme Data Rate Memory into the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tomshardware.com\/hardnews\/20050125_170734.html\">market<\/a>. Will it repeat the strategic mistakes it made with the introduction of RDRAM a few years ago?<\/p>\n<p>* Sun Microsystems has place 1600 patents related to Open Solaris in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.com\/smi\/Press\/sunflash\/2005-01\/sunflash.20050125.2..html\">Public Domain<\/a>. This follows their opeing up the their source code earlier in the week.<\/p>\n<p>* Jef Raskin has recieved <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pacificatribune.com\/Stories\/0,1413,92~3247~2636312,00.html\">funding<\/a> for work on the Humane Interface, a way for computers to work with people, not the other way around. Expect something good from one of the original Apple employees who helped design the Mac.<\/p>\n<p>* Hate spiders? Stay out of this lab &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/channel\/health\/gm-food\/dn1807\">Scientists have spun  the first lab-made spider silk\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"space\"><\/a><strong>SPACE<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>* A new study suggests that Dark Matter may have played an important role in the formation <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/3217961\/\">of the cosmos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* It doesn&#8217;t quite have the ring of the Weather Girls song, but it&#8217;s raining Methane on<a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/4193043.stm\">Titan<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>* The BBC is reporting that the federal budget does not include funding for the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/4197505.stm\">Hubble Rescue Mission<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Scientists are studying the results of a Gas Chromatography Experiment on the Huygens Probe to determine the source of all that <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/4196261.stm\">methane<\/a> on Titan. <\/p>\n<p>* Europe&#8217;s Smart-1 probe has started snapping some incredible pictures using its <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/4209995.stm\">&#8220;Arnie&#8221;<\/a> camera. Yeah, I know, we&#8217;ve seen pictures of the moon before. But that was with 35 year old technology, not the latest digital technology.  Check them out.<\/p>\n<p>* Astronomers have named an asteroid for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/6867061\/\">Douglas Adams<\/a>, the author who penned &#8220;The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a name=\"environment\"><\/a><strong>THE ENVIRONMENT<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>* Scientists have successfully created Petrified Wood <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/4206387.stm\">in the lab<\/a>. Thank god, I was worried we&#8217;d run out.<\/p>\n<p>* Scientists running a global climate model using shared time on volunteers PC&#8217;s have seen <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/science\/nature\/4210629.stm\">some alarming results<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>* Scientists have found a way to use half the energy previously used in high temperature electrolisis, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.extremetech.com\/article2\/0,1558,1732961,00.asp?kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532\">breakthrough in hydrogen production for fuel cells<\/a>. Too bad it&#8217;ll take new nuclear plant construction to supply the electricity we&#8217;re going to need to make all that hydrogen.<\/p>\n<p>* Fortunately, other scientists are working on ways to use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/news\/technology\/0,1282,65936,00.html?tw=rss.TOP\">sunlight to generate Hydrogen<\/a>.
