{"id":892,"date":"2005-10-31T07:09:19","date_gmt":"2005-10-31T07:09:19","guid":{"rendered":"0"},"modified":"2006-09-28T12:09:26","modified_gmt":"2006-09-28T12:09:26","slug":"department_of_a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marcdanziger.com\/?p=892","title":{"rendered":"Department of Are You ******* Kidding Me?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The tagline for the (generic, pretty uninteresting) <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2005\/10\/31\/national\/31civil.html?hp&#038;ex=1130821200&#038;en=2c46bd70b2784da5&#038;ei=5094&#038;partner=homepage\" target=\"browser\">New York Times article<\/a> on the future direction of African-American politics is:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>Many African-Americans are uncertain of what the civil rights movement accomplished and how it should move forward.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;&#8230;what the civil rights movement accomplished&#8230;&#8221;?? <\/p>\n<p>My God. I <a href=\"http:\/\/www.armedliberal.com\/archives\/000582.html\" target=\"browser\">spent a lot of time as kid<\/a> with two black families and both Joe and Theodis could tell me and told me at every opportunity that they could &#8211; very clearly and elequently &#8211; what the civil rights movement had accomplished, and how proud and happy they were for their fellow Southern blacks who&#8217;d finally had enough.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d suggest that a better use of the time of whatever editor wrote that, and of the Times&#8217; valuable newsprint (and web space) would be collecting some oral histories of just what the civil rights movement accomplished so that we all have some appreciation for it.
