Radios for Helmland

So it’s been a long time since I’ve worked with Spirit of America. Recent personal events have – let’s say rekindled – my interest in doing what I can in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the reality is that SoA has settled in to steadily meet the needs of local civilians and of our military who are trying desperately to build positive relationships with them.

I just noticed something that I liked a lot in my inbox – a challenge grant, from someone who’s given SoA $10K, to raise another $10K and help buy solar powered radios for villagers in the Helmland, where Micheal Yon most recently was with the Two Rifles, and where the US Marines are working so hard today.

$18.00 buys a radio, or lunch for 2 at Burger King. Which is more important?

  1. Hey Armed Liberal,
When are you going to stop screwing around with stuff like this (not that there’s not a place for it) and finally address the vast array of messed up stuff the guy you voted for is trying to foist on to us.

    Thanks,
A wavering fan of this site

  2. I just re-watched Valkyrie (2008) on DVD, and it’s a harsh reminder that those who don’t fully make the transition from complaining about how things are going to acting decisively do themselves and their cause no favors.

Armed Liberal is trying to do something. Respect.

  3. Mike, sorry you’re wavering – I’m working on two biggish posts, one on health care (I think we’re screwing it up) and one on Afghanistan (I think we’re screwing it up)…my own feelings about Obama are pretty complex right now – I supported him largely because I thought that a period of conciliation after a period of toughness would potentially lead to good international outcomes.

The cat is still in the box, as Schroedenger pointed out, and we have no idea how it’s going to come out.

I ought to write about that as well –

    Marc

  4. For me, a particularly scary thing is Obama selling us out to the UN for various causes, particularly the “Copenhagen Treaty”, which features the construction of a giant global, untouchable AGW technocracy administered through the UN, and the various un-Constitutional UNisms such as the blasphemy treaty.

This is what happens when “citizens of the world” run your country. At least most of the old-fashioned laborist lefties, however much I may have disagreed with the details of their politics, were reliably American and committed to American sovereignty. The current crop of New Left types aren’t, and would happily move to France or Switzerland when the poop hits the fan.

  5. bq. …a period of conciliation…

Just what world are you living in, Marc? Ask Fox, the Chamber of Commerce, and whatever industry sector has been demonized, or whoever has been labeled ‘racist’ this particular week just how conciliatory things are turning out to be.

We’re getting the realism of Jimmy Carter combined with the ethics and judgment of Richard Nixon. I didn’t really need to see either of them again in my lifetime.

  6. Actually, David, I don’t see where you’re feelings on Obama are very complex… it just sounds like you don’t like him very much.
