Has anyone else noticed that the newest version of Technorati is basically useless? Does anyone at Technorati pay attention or care?
Go over and click on a search for windsofchange.net.
Look at the results – most of them are either a) posts within WoC itself (from the ‘read more’ links); or b) blogrolls of sites that have update recently that contain WoC.
I went and looked for Smythe’s World as a control…same thing.
Look, it would be ridiculously easy to eliminate results from within sites (or at minimum from ‘read more and other set links) and equally easy to eliminate results from blogrolls. If they can’t figure out how to do it, they can buy a day of my time and a plane ticket and I’ll go show them.
Or I could get off my butt and build a better one…
I don’t think it’s limited to Technorati. I think that all of the blog-related measuring and tracking tools have become useless.
There are probably a number of factors in this: sheer growth in the number of blogs, increasing complexity of the blogs themselves, acquisition of Blogger by Google all come to mind.
I would agree with Dave. See, for example, all the metrics that were standards when I started blogging in January 2003: Daypop, the TTLB Ecosystem, etc. They’ll all sufficiently buggy as to be completely out of business or so cluttered with non-blogs or system gaming that they’re a shadow of their former selves.
Re: Technorati, links from blogrolls aren’t problematic per se but I’d agree that it’s bizarre to have them show up at the top of the list as “new” when it’s just the same link migrated back tot he top.
I quit Technorati tagging my posts because I never saw even one link in my referers log.
Where do I get most of my hids? Search engines.
On most topics I comment on I’m either #1 or in the top 3.
BTW My business cards look like:

Search
“M. Simon”
and
“Power and Control”

Google is a better friend than Technorati.
Correct! “My Technorati page”:http://www.technorati.com/search/www.donaldsensing.com says that I last updated my site 212 days ago! Hmm, I remember posting this morning… And yesterday, and .. well, you know.
What a relief. I thought it was only me … got links, and they weren’t credited, posted items and they weren’t mentioned (although MySpace obscentities by highschoolers were)…nearly od’d on green tea in my despair.
Agree on the search engines. I’ve been amazed at the traffic from a variety of them … and Blogarithim (sp?) … tons of traffic. ? Whazzat?
What I find particularly useless about Technorati is the amount of Spam Blogs they index. If I could hit a button that said “flag this blog” like on craigslist or amazon or ANYWHERE ELSE and that flagging resulted in the blog being removed, this wouldn’t be much of a problem. Instead, most of the results for various keywords return ONLY Spam Blogs. Bleh.. it provides a different view of the data than google but does a worse job of keeping the data relevant.
The 21st century is the meta-information age.. Technorati doesn’t seem to be doing a very good job with information about the information they index.
