Happy New Year, Everyone

– even hypocrisyrules and Andrew Lazarus! Here’s hoping 2007 allows us to continue debating and maybe even learning together here at Winds.

In the real world, may each of you have a year without too much high drama. Boring is OK, you know.

And for all the troops and others who are in harm’s way – may you all outlive this year and come safe home, covered in honor.

  1. Thinking of a few things this New Year:

My big sister’s little boy, who was born the day before yesterday, will be returning to Iraq in April for his second tour. I pray it will be less adventurous than his first tour. He is proud to be a Marine and proud of his service in Iraq, so am I proud of him though I wish it were not necessary for him to go back.

I’m thinking of my own generation, which came of age in the 1980s – a time of renewed optimism, triumph over communism, and peace. (One of my school friends did make it to Grenada, though, where he boldly captured an enemy squad that came up and surrendered to him while he was sitting on the latrine.) We were lucky. I wonder if we’ve been worthy of it – “Earned it”, as Captain Miller said.

And I’m grateful for all the people here, and across the blogosphere, from whom I have learned so much. Happy New Year.
