I think its all very sad and my sympathy goes out to those directly effected – yet why does the media (and the blogging community) seem to be giving so much attention to this event when just this week 7 were killed in a plane crash in East Timor, 8 were killed in a train crash in Australia and over 40 were killed in Zimbabwe in a train crash.
I know there are some differences – but I wonder why there is almost frenzy like attention to the shuttle tragedy and so little global attention to the others? It seems we value some human lives above others perhaps? Or is it that we caught the shuttle event live on camera? Or is it that accidents involving shuttles are rarer and therefore cause more of a stir? Maybe its a combination of these reasons – but I guess I’d be encouraging us all to keep some perspective.
The reason everyone is paying more attention to the Columbia than to train wrecks is simple: it may well radically change the course of manned space exploration. Also, it marked not just the loss of seven humans–thousands of other talented humans lost all their work and sweat and dreams and time they devoted to it, away from families.
By contrast, no one is going to stop riding trains simply because a few trains have had accidents, more or less as they have done routinely for a century and a half.
I am tired of the U.S. government wasting precious money on the space program. There is no need for manned space craft anymore they can send probes up there and do analysis from the NASA headquarters. I am a realist and see the benefits of space exploration. We should spend more money in A.I. programs and then send them up in space, they need no air and food to survive and can travel far more distances than humans. Then once our A.I. programs get off the ground, start pumping money into the space program again. We also need to speed more money on fuel or research how nuclear space craft that creates it’s own energy and moves at the near speed of light could be possible. Money is being given to the wrong developmental stages of space explorations. We also have a war on terror and we need more money for clandestine operations and lanuage training so we can have superior intelligence to ensure a 9/11 never happens again. We need to start assassinating these rogue tryannical leaders without question and not tell the media every move we make, this is vital as well.
