NOMENCLATURE MATTERS

Meryl Yourish busts the AP and other media for calling the Chechens “guerillas” rather than “terrorists”. She’s absolutely right.
Guerillas attack military targets.
Terrorists attack unprepared civilians.
Let’s be clear about this.
And it’s infuriating to see the Salon headline as ’67 hostages die as Moscow siege ends’. Over 700 hostages were saved from a group of murderous thugs through the professional work of the Russian rescue team.
Good for them.
Between Chief Moose and the Russians, the good guys have had a good week.
Now if we could only make that unnecessary…

  1. Over 700 hostages may be saved, but a number of the saved hostages has already died and 640 remain hospitalized.
According one witness who was inside, only 2 hostages were killed by the terrorists.. hindsight is of course 20/20 but until more people are released from the hospital, I wouldn’t call the Russian rescue team professional just yet..

  2. Number is up over 100 dead as a result of the gas used.
I approve of the attack, but the Russians are FAR from the “good guys.” What they have done and are doing in Chechnya is a war crime. If the Chechens had seized the Ministry of Defense or the Kremlin, I would have zero problem with them.
However, since they seized a theater full of innocents, I have zero problem with them dying, either. But the Russians are NOT anything remotely similar to the “good guys.”
