Weird Site Behavior

I’ve been having some weird behavior on the site for the last few days – the columns resize when I click on any ofthe links (not in the ways I’d expect). Anyone else seeing this? Please note what browser/OS you are using, if so.

  1. Yes. And I’m on Firefox 1.5.0.4. Sometimes the text column gets narrower, other times it widens. Weird!

  2. Yes, it does resize using Win2000 with all service packs, updates, etc. applied. Using firefox 1.5.04

No problems using Ubuntu 5.10 with Firefox 1.07

  3. When I use firefox yeah, clicking on comments takes three times for the link to open.

I tend to read WOC through SharpReader RSS feeder and it doesnt occur through that.

  4. Yes, the column resizes and the link jumps farther down, so I have to chase the link a few times before getting to where it goes. I’m running WinXP & Firefox 1.5.0.4

  5. Yeah, I mentioned this to Joe by email four or five days ago. I’ve verified this under all Microsoft OS’s from 98 through XP under either IE or Firefox.

  6. I have to click “direct link” twice to get to the permalinked post. The first time it resizes the column narrower.

I find this on both the latest Firefox and the latest Safari (Mac OSX 10.4.6)

  7. FWIW, I do get this (having to click “read the rest” twice) with Firefox and don’t with Opera 8.5.4, at least on my Mac running OS X 10.3.9.

I know I get if with current Firefox on my XP laptop.

On Mac Firefox, it adjusts page position in frame the first time but I don’t see much of a reformatting of width; on XP Firefox I see the main column text get markedly narrower after the first click.

  8. I get it as well, using Firefox 1.5.0.4, Bon Echo a2 and Flock 0.7.0.15, running OS X 10.4.6. No problems on Safari or Opera 9 (though the recent entries box seems rather small).

  9. I think Mozilla needs Firefox 1.5.0.5 soon! However, there were some MS Windows patches implemented yesterday…????????? (It’s a FEATURE, not a bug!)

  10. Click once, column widens, link moves away from mouse
    Click second time – works.
    XP Home – Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.4) Gecko/20060508 Firefox/1.5.0.4

  11. I see the goofiness – on some clicks, not on others – with Firefox 1.5.0.1 on Debian-stable. Konqueror 3.3.2 shows no such strange behavior, and renders the columns much more nicely to begin with.
Very peculiar behavior for a page formatted using tables! Is it the main column that’s resizing, or the sidebars, or…?

  12. I have had the same problem for the last couple of weeks on your site. I run win 2000 and use Firefox/1.5.0.4. But the problem was occuring on the earlier releas of Firefox.

  13. Marc,

The weird site behavior includes the main (default screen). For a while it appeared either extra narrow or extra wide. Clicking on the Direct Link button to open an entire thread resulted in the screen being resized to normal.

Sometimes clicking on Back or Main would cause the main screen to resize to normal too, but not always.

The problem seems to have gone away.

  14. OK, we get it. Evariste is out of commission, so I’m badgering Donovan Janus of Exposure Manager to look at the template.

    Working it…

Hi AL! I hope to be able to have time to look at it this Friday.

  15. Win2003 SP1, Firefox 1.5.0.4

On first click, the column widths change, moving the link away from the cursor. On second click, the link works and the comment page displays

  16. Weird site behavior is back. The type width is far too narrow at the main screen, and resizes to normal when clicking on a link, but the main screen view reverts to too narrow upon hitting the back button, or clicking on Main at the top of the screen.
