The Economics of Airport Reading

OK, something trivial and yet close to my heart.

I walked out of the airport bookstore with a copy of the Economist (still a damn good magazine), and didn’t buy the $30 – 550 page history book. Then I thought it through and realized that I’d done the wrong thing. The magazine lasted about 20 minutes, and the book probably would have lasted 5 – 10 hours. So the $7 copy of the magazine is far more expensive than the $30 (plus tax) book.

On the other hand, I’d have to lug the damn thing around.

  1. Yeah, cheap-skate that I am, I noticed the same issues with feeding _my_ text-stimulus-while-travelling addiction a couple of years ago, as I spent more time going to hoity-toity (or are they fancy-schmancy?) lawyers’ conferences with the Woman in The Hat.

Finally looked at the credit card bills from WH Smith, etc. and decided that I’d be much better off taking actual snail-mail subs to several magazines which I accumulate at the house and simply _don’t read_ until I’m on a trip.
