D-Day, 65 Years later

When we were in France last winter, we went to Normandy (Calvados!).

On Omaha Beach, we saw this sculpture – “The Braves” by French sculptor Anilore Banon that was set up on Omaha Beach.

Braver men than me waded through that water 65 years ago.

  1. Very intense, though it’s tough to assess the scale from this one pic. You also say “set up”, as opposed to “set”, or “built” which implies a certain lack of permanence; not sure which I think would be the more compelling artistic statement: having these be permanent, as in sunk on pilings, or have’em eventually, one by one, slip away.

(That latter, it occurs to me, could be a safety issue though; since Christo’s fatal California “umbrella” folly a few years ago, sculptors have needed to think this stuff through a little better (interestingly, at least as far as I know, nobody’s ever been injured by a Calder or DeSuvero))

  2. Yes, Omaha Beach is a humbling place to visit. It can bring you to tears, just to stand there, look, and imagine the fear and courage of those who had to pass through that abattoir.

    As for the Calvados… Merveilleus!
