ARIANNA ON ACCOUNTING

In this column, Arianna Huffington…gosh, it’s amazing how she’s transformed herself…actually nails the ethical issues in modern corporate finance.
I actually need to dig into her stuff a bit and try and see what happened. Maybe we can make it contagious.
Her transformation into someone who I regularly believe makes lots of sense matches the counter-transformation of Lewis Lapham who has become a babbling idiot.
Is there some kind of Law Of Conservation of Sense?

This has been happening for a while. She even wrote about Tulia back in April.I thought at first she was being opportunistic since her conversion started at around the time Bush came into office, but then I saw this tribute she wrote to Bill Maher’s Politically Incorrect. Is it possible? Her political transformation can be credited to…Bill Maher and Harry Shearer?

It’s not just that she went from right to left; it’s that she wentfrom (appearing) like a right-wing ninny to being a centrist who seems quite interesteing and intelligent.A.L.

I don’t know if you remember michael huffington’s 1994 campaign for senate? he bought himself a congressional seat a few years earlier and then spent millions of his own money trying to unseat Dianne Feinstein with a very smarmy campaign based on soundbites and advertising. This was the Prop 187 election where Democrats were getting hammered. Feinstein is a tough cookie though, and just barely beat him. After that Arianna Huffington divorced Michael, and became a protege of Newt Gingrich, and then John McCain. One thing I’ve always wondered. After Prop 187 was declared unconstitutional (which was frankly, an indefensible act of judicial activism, though I’m not complaining), why wasn’t there a backlash? The California electorate acted like a child who whines and hollers for a cookie, and then forgets about it five minutes later. And of course, ironically, the ultimate consequence of Prop 187 was the heavy damage it inflicted on the California Republican Party.

My wife noticed the same thing just yesterday and asked the same question. I’d noticed it a couple of months ago and didn’t think much about it, for some reason. It just seemed natural.Scary

Yes, I always thought Michael H. was Arianna’s sock puppet, and I attributed much of his vacuousness to her.And that’s where my opinion of her started out. As noted, it’s changing rapidly.A.L.
